             abstract = "This research evaluated the Brazilian Legislation regarding 
                         water-springs, watercourses and sloped areas using Geographical 
                         Information System (SIG). The studied area was the critical 
                         Conservation Area of Santa Cruz creek. The Conservation Area 
                         considered in this study encompassed 17,50% of the total sub-basin 
                         area, of which 58,00% was under unsuitable use, chiefly occupied 
                         by pastures and crops. Pasture is the predominant use in the 
                         Conservation Areas of water-springs, riparian forests e sloped 
                         areas, occupying 45,69%, 53,23% and 71,95%, respectively. The 
                         results showed that the legislation of Conservation Areas chiefly 
                         related to water-springs and riparian forest is not enforced 
                         properly in the Santa Cruz creek. The enforcement of the law and 
                         the proper vegetation restoration have to be achieved as soon as 
                         possible if the quantity, quality and timing of Santa Cruz creek 
                         sub-basin water is to restablished.",
